OH THE MISERY! By Stevie T

In case you missed what Bob Clark of the R Guard wrote in yesterday's(Tue) paper about Washington State's unprecendented level of ineptitude, I'll share. They've surrendered 172 consecutive points. Since returning an interception for a TD against the Beavs on October 11th, it's been a massacre that would have made Custer wince. The math works out to 24 touchdowns and a couple of field goals versus OSU for the final 2 quarters then wipeouts at the hands of USC and Stanford. 8 different teams in the ACC haven't given up that many points all year. I could not find another team in the 6 BCS leagues who are within 100 points of what they've coughed up in those last 10 quarters. This is pathetic. Bill Doba took over a program that have risen from the ashes and become a significant player in the Pac 10 from Mike Price. What the heck happened in Pullman? Is Doba and the people he surrounded himself with the most incompetent buffoons in the history of college football? Here's my question. We've all followed sports for a very long time. Is this Wazzou group as bad as you've seen? I defy anyone to come up with a team that's absolutely worse. Jump in with your thoughts.

Suffice it to say that the current Washington State team would likely be overmatched against the feisty Sheldon Hign Irish gridiron players. It's a sad commentary on the state of WSU football.

How bout John McKay's 1976 0-14 Tampa Bay Bucs? Shut out five times, averaged fewer than nine points per game, and had Steve Spurrier as their QB. They then started the next season 0-12. That's 26 losses to start a franchise. WOW!

Yeah, it's pretty miserable up in Cougar Land, and especially miserable if you're an alumni living between the UO and OSU campuses.

Bill Doba was a great assistant, but didn't know what the heck he was doing as a head coach. He won the Holiday Bowl in his first year using Price's players. I think the only thing that kept him there as long as he was, was that he consistently beat Washington. His last game, lest we Cougs forget, which was also our last victory against a D-1A opponent, was last year's Apple Cup.

Doba might be the worst recruiter that I have ever seen, and maybe an even worse eveluator of character. Injuries aside, Wulff had to kick some knuckleheads off of the team over the summer; players that I understand were being counted on to contribute this year. Mother Hubbard's Cupboard was already bare, doing that stripped the paint off of it.

This year is a disaster. Next year likely isn't going to be a lot better. Guys have gotta quit missing meals and they have to learn how to prepare for a game. If you don't know what the heck you're doing and you're underweight from not eating as much as you should be, it makes for a bad day on the field.

If the Cougs are competitive by Year Three, I'll be happy.

I watched the UO and OSU games in person, and they really weren't that close.

As for THIS YEAR'S Apple Cup--it's gonna be Toilet Bowl 2. I'm escaping to Vegas for that weekend so I won't even watch it!
