THOUGHTS FROM A ROCKET SCIENTIST by ST

Do we really need to concern ourselves with the NBA free agent class that will sign new blockbuster deals the season AFTER next? Just because Lebron James was in New York last night they're talking in the future sense. In a previous life before cable, satellite and the internet, the Big Apple exposure could mean more bucks and attention. Do these morons with nothing better to discuss not recall Michael Jordan or see Peyton Manning doing every other ad? Don't get me wrong, there is nothing like the NY media coverage with a dozen daily papers, not to mention TV & radio, but it's not a necessary destination any longer for mega dollars and commercial opportunities.
If I hear another Duck fan saying it might be better if the Beavs win the Civil War to get 2 Pac-10 teams in a BCS bowl I'm finding a nice cozy bell tower. Are you freaking kidding me? How can you call yourself a fan of a team then even consider the bright side if they lose. This is the joy of backing a football or hockey team. You gear up for the huge rivalry game with everything on the line and hope your guys demolish the other bozos.
I've always enjoyed Dan Patrick but now he's graduated to another level in my book. On today's show they were discussing the worst musical groups ever and he threw Journey into the ring. Said if he had to listen to that lame ass crap you'd have to hide shoelaces. Perhaps on SportsTalk we need to roll through that list of unacceptable bands who should face the musical guillotine.
Have a happy holiday.

Steve,

Love the show and agree with you 90% of the time, but I have to disagree with the conversation around rock bands. I have two analogies to share:

1. Music snobs (sorry, but that is the best label) are very much like religious fanatics; you assume everyone agrees with your point of view and you indirectly tear down anyone that would have the audacity to listen what you think is crap. Music (and religion) is a matter of personal choice, and believe it or not the groups that you might find great are very often "crap" to others. I honestly feel that my personal "suicide" tape would be listening to music snobs ripping any type of music that doesn't meet their personal taste.

2. Labeling certain music as "corporate" is a bit like labeling certain fish as "wet". I believe that one of your "acceptable" music groups is Led Zeppelin, which I now instantly associate with Cadillac due to the "corporate" commercials that have been shoved down my throat for years. Furthermore, everyone and everything in our country is associated with corporations in some way (how do you think that the Talking Heads distributed their music to millions?), as you should know when you support the fine sponsors of your program.

I personally love Air Supply, The Stones, Talking Heads, Bill Monroe (father of bluegrass), Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, George Strait, and Mozart to name just a few. I am sure there is someone that would label me for liking any single one of those preferences, but I like to just listen to the music and avoid labels and whether corporations support the music.

Finally, how can you be a music snob and not know that Michael McDonald played with Steely Dan? You need to listen closely to the background singing on "Peg".

Love you and your show, but just felt the need to "bust your chops" a bit on this subject! Keep up the good work! I am an avid listener!

P.S.: My son called into your show about 10 years ago (when he was 9 years old) to yell "Wazzssssup?" back when that saying was all the rage! He is now a freshman at Oregon. Time flies, eh? GO DUCKS!

P.S.S.: Why don't you use the "signature" intro and exit "swing" music you used at your last gig on that other channel? Loved that stuff... really defined the show. I guess that might be why you don't want to use it?

P.S.S.S.: What ever happened to Brooklyn John? Did he go back East again?
